Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos may leave Ibrox at the end of the season.

St Mirren Manager Alex Rae looks on during the Scottish Championship match between Rangers and St. Mirren at Ibrox Stadium on February 27, 2016 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Former Rangers midfielder Alex Rae has told The Scottish Sun that he thinks Leicester City would be a ‘good move’ for striker Alfredo Morelos.

Morelos, a 2017 signing from HJK Helsinki, has become a hero at Ibrox, and was already popular after 18 goals last season.

The Colombian has taken his game to another level under Steven Gerrard though, smashing 28 goals in 42 games for Gers this season.

Morelos, 22, is bound to be attracting huge interest off the back of his exploits at Ibrox, and Gerrard has batted away any rumours so far this term.

However, Rangers may find it difficult to keep Morelos at Ibrox this summer, with Premier League teams no doubt interested in signing him despite his disciplinary issues.

In fact, TEAMtalk reported just days ago that Leicester City – now managed by Brendan Rodgers – are interested in signing Morelos to bolster their attacking options alongside Jamie Vardy.

Rodgers saw Morelos first half for nearly two years having been Celtic manager, and could return to Scotland in order to raid the Gers for their talismanic striker.

Now, ex-Rangers ace Rae has suggested that Morelos is worth as much as former Celtic striker Moussa Dembele, and believes that Leicester would be a ‘good move’ for him, feeling that he could then go on even higher like Virgil van Dijk and Victor Wanyama have.

“In terms of goals, yes, he is. Look at the goals he’s got this year,” said Rae. “He is 22 and the development he has undergone in the last year has been remarkable. When you look at Morelos last season, he ran offside in one of the Old Firm games about four times. From that guy to the guy now, the progress over a year has been remarkable. He is bullying centre-halves and scoring goals. If he continues to progress in this manner, you start asking how far can he go? He will go to a stepping stone club first, rather than one of the top four. He’s already been linked to Leicester and a club like that would be a good move.”

“If you look at Virgil van Dijk and Victor Wanyama, that’s the path Morelos will be looking to take. If you had asked me a year ago if he could follow in the footsteps of Van Dijk and Wanyama, I would have said he would do well to get a Premiership club. However, his trajectory over the past year has been incredible. If he can go down there and keep scoring he could kick on again,” he added.
