Alex Rae has blasted English Championship side West Bromwich Albion for making an offer worth a reported £3million to sign Rangers captain James Tavernier – and claimed it would take ‘silly money’ to land the skipper.

Sky Sports have claimed that Darren Moore’s Baggies tabled a bid of £3million to land the 27-year-old, but Steven Gerrard has rejected the offer out of hand.

It is believed that Rangers will not sell the former Newcastle United and Wigan Athletic until their valuation of the rampaging right-back is finally met, as Tavernier continues to shine north of the border.

Rangers icon Rae stated that West Brom would need to pay something extraordinary to buy Tavernier, as England’s 5pm window draw nearer. He also questioned why Rangers would consider a sale when they are building.

Tavernier has become the subject of interest from down south this summer after an excellent 2017-18 campaign on a personal level in which he scored nine and created the same amount from the right side of defence.

Given the armband by Gerrard, Tavernier has continued to shine under the former Liverpool and England captain, with two goals and two assists in five outings. He is expected to start for Rangers against Maribor on Thursday night.

James Tavernier of Rangers arrives at the stadium prior to the Scottish Premier League match between Celtic and Rangers at Celtic Park on April 29, 2018 in Glasgow, Scotland.
