Jermain Defoe was in red-hot form over the weekend, as Rangers dispatched Hamilton to move to the top of the Scottish Premiership.

Jermain Defoe of Rangers FC looks on prior to the Ladbrokes Premiership match between Rangers and Celtic at Ibrox Stadium on September 01, 2019 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Alex Rae has praised Jermain Defoe for his ‘ frightening’ ability to outthink an opponent after he hit a hat-trick for Rangers on Sunday.

Steven Gerrard’s side moved to the top of the Scottish Premiership when they thrashed Hamilton 5-0 on home soil.

Defoe started the encounter at Ibrox and by the 71st minute, he had struck three goals for his team, who capitalised on their rivals slipping up earlier on in the day.

Speaking to Clyde 1 Superscorecard, Rae was in awe at the hunger in which Defoe plays the game despite the former England man turning 37 on Monday.

“I think he’s turned 37,” Rae told Superscorecard. “When you look at that, the one thing that stands out for me is his appetite for the game. When you get to a certain age, it starts to wane.

“But he seems to as hungry as ever. He still gets that buzz, that joy of scoring goals and he plays with a smile on his face. As much as he is sharp in terms of movement, you see upstairs, he is frightening. He is always ahead of the game.”

There is fierce competition between Defoe and Alfredo Morelos for that number one striker spot, as both are producing the goods when called upon.

Defoe is the perfect partner on the training pitch and the dressing room for Morelos because the youngster can feed off his experience.

Given the number of goals Defoe has scored for England and his record in the Premier League, a player like Morelos can only learn off what he does with and especially without the ball.
