Rangers are on the lookout for a new manager after sacking Pedro Caixinha last week.

St Mirren Manager Alex Rae looks on during the Scottish Championship match between Rangers and St. Mirren at Ibrox Stadium on February 27, 2016 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Alex Rae has urged Rangers to pick a “safe pair of hands” as they continue in their search to replace Pedro Caixinha.

Caixinha lost his job at Ibrox as the club began to fall further and further away from Old Firm rivals Celtic, while murmurs around the club suggested that he had lost the dressing room.

The 46-year-old was finally given the boot after the Gers failed to hold on to a narrow lead against Kilmarnock, as ex-Rangers winger Chris Burke scored in the 95th minute to equalise.

Manager of Rangers Pedro Caixinha walks out to inspect the pitch before the Betfred Cup Semi Final at Hampden Park on October 22, 2017 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Plenty of names have been mentioned to replace Caixinha, with bookmakers Paddy Power pricing Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes as the favourite to take over, while Alex McLeish, Michel Preud’homme and Graeme Murty are also in the running.

Speaking to the Daily Record, former Rangers midfielder Rae called on the Gers hierarchy to pick someone they can trust as well as urging fans to remain patient as it will take time to catch Old Firm rivals Celtic.

“They need a safe pair of hands. I don’t know the dressing-room so I can’t say it’s rotten but players have been banished and that’s not ideal. By binning the manager, it at least gives everyone a clean slate,” Rae said.

“If Celtic lost all their inter-national players and had to rebuild it would take them years as well. Whether it has happened quickly enough at Rangers is up for debate. But it will take time to get to where they want to be.”

Rangers manager Graeme Murty is seen during the Scottish Cup Quarter final match between Rangers and Hamilton Academical at Ibrox Stadium on March 4, 2017 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Rangers got back to winning ways on Saturday under interim boss Murty, as the former Reading defender inspired the Gers to a 3-1 away win at Hearts – a win made all the more better by Celtic’s draw against Kilmarnock.

The Gers are next in action on Saturday as the play host to Partick Thistle, with a new manager potentially installed.
