The Glasgow Rangers ex-player spoke ahead of Ibrox hosting Kilmarnock in the Scottish Cup.
Glasgow Rangers ex-ace Alex Rae has issued a stern warning to his one-time club’s current players ahead of their Scottish Cup fifth-round replay with Kilmarnock on Wednesday night.
The original tie took place at Rugby Park on 9 February and finished goalless, meaning a replay at Ibrox, and Rae thinks this is “probably the last chance” for Gers to win a trophy this season.
It wasn’t that long ago that Rangers were vying with Celtic and Kilmarnock in a tight race for the Scottish Premiership title but there are eight points between the Old Firm rivals now.
Indeed, Rae’s comments could either be interpreted as pessimistic, hinting that Steven Gerrard’s are unlikely to peg their bitter rivals back, or merely realistic.
“This is probably the last chance for silverware at Ibrox this season,” Rae told BBC Sport. “Gerrard is looking for character, looking for leaders.
“There’s pressure all the time at Rangers. You’re expected to win trophies and that comes from the manager as well. You’ve got to embrace that, that’s part of the pressure of playing for Rangers. But you have to adapt to that pressure.”
Rae’s comments seem at odds with those of fellow Gers ex-player Lee McCulloch, who recently told The Glasgow Evening Times that the Ibrox side can overturn the eight-point deficit, what with two more games between the two Glasgow sides yet to be played.
The next Old Firm game comes on March 31 at Celtic Park as Gers bid to finally put a stop to their bitter rivals’ title-winning run.
