Rangers kept their second-place hopes alive with a draw at Pittodrie.

Former Rangers midfielder Alex Rae has reacted on Twitter in frustrated fashion at the performance of referee Steven McLean following the Gers’ 1-1 draw against Aberdeen on Tuesday night.

The Light Blues kept their second-place hopes alive by earning a point at Pittodrie, after Kenny McLean had given the Dons the lead from the penalty spot. But Ross McCrorie equalised with a well-placed header in the second half.

Ref McLean gave the Dons a penalty in the first half for a foul on his namesake Kenny McLean, who indeed stood up to take the penalty and send Jak Alnwick the wrong way. But replays showed Alfredo Morelos got the ball.

In a feisty match that saw the referee produce 10 yellow cards – six of which went to Rangers – Rae called on Scottish head of refereeing John Flemming to take action, but did praise McCrorie.

The Gers remain in third place with one game to go, but will surely fancy their chances of achieving second place behind their bitter rivals Celtic as they face Hibernian at Ibrox on Sunday.

Aberdeen have to travel to Glasgow to face Scottish champions Celtic at Parkhead, but Brendan Rodgers could look to field a weakened side in order to keep his first-team stars fresh for the Scottish Cup final on May 19.
