Alex Rae has been quoted as saying by The Scottish Sun that sources have told him that Aberdeen boss Derek McInnes could become the new Rangers manager.

The former Rangers midfielder, who was on the books of the Ibrox outfit from 2004 until 2006, has revealed that he has been told by sources that the Gers want McInnes.

“A couple of sources had text me in the last few days to say that that was the case, and I’m thinking they weren’t overly involved with the club,” The Scottish Sun quotes Rae as saying when asked if McInnes is the man for Rangers. “And then within the last few days people have eluded that it may well be done next week.”

According to The Scottish Sun, McInnes is the frontrunner for the Rangers managerial role, and that an official approach for the former St Johnstone and Bristol City boss is close.

McInnes knows Rangers well, having been on the books of the Gers from 1995 until 2000, and given what he has done at Aberdeen so far, he would be a very good managerial appointment for Rangers.

Aberdeen are second in the Scottish Premiership table at the moment with 30 points from 15 matches, four points behind leaders Celtic, who have a game in hand. As for Rangers, the Gers are three points behind McInnes’s side in third place.
