Rangers have completed the signing of NK Osijek left-back Borna Barisic after the Croatian defender signed a four-year deal with Steven Gerrard’s side – and former Gers midfielder Alex Rae has applauded the signing.

BBC Sport claim Rangers have splashed out £2.2million to land the three-time Croatia international, who will link up with fellow Croatian Nikola Katic after the latter joined Rangers from Slaven Belupo this summer.

Though Rangers were not in serious need of a left-sided defender, Gerrard has decided to spend big on Barisic after he starred against the Gers during the last round of Europa League qualifying – with Barisic even scoring.

Rae watched Barisic impress over the two-legged tie and described the signing of the 25-year-old defender as a “good addition”, in what is Gerrard’s 11th addition of the summer.

Rangers already boast Declan John, Lee Wallace and Jon Flanagan as cover on the left side of defence, with the latter starting all of Gerrard’s five competitive games so far.

Wallace’s future remains in doubt after last season’s debacle that saw him and Kenny Miller suspended, while Declan John is being linked with a move to English Championship side Swansea City.
