The former Norwich City boss was linked with the Rangers post before Caixinha’s appointment at Ibrox.

Alex Neil was employed as Norwich City’s manager when Rangers were linked with a move for him earlier this year.

At one stage, the Scot was named bookies’ favourite to succeed Mark Warburton at Ibrox, although he later denied receiving any contact from the Gers and stressed that he had “no intention of going anywhere”.

Barely a week after and Neil was gone, sacked in the aftermath of a 5-1 defeat against Sheffield Wednesday.

By that point, however, Rangers were homing in on the appointment of Pedro Caixinha, who has so far failed to noticeably improve the side he inherited from Warburton two days later.

With no transfer window in which to put his own stamp on things, it’s perhaps to early to judge the Portuguese.

Nevertheless, that didn’t stop Talksport presenter Jim White from questioning Neil about his interest in the Rangers job, “should it go wrong for Caixinha”.

“You’re trying to get me to comment on other people’s jobs, which I’m not going to do. That’s not going to happen,” the 35-year-old replied, affably.

“Would I go back to Scotland? Potentially. I wouldn’t rule anything out. I’m from Scotland, I love Scotland, I’ve lived in Scotland most of my days. However, I think you’ve got restrictions in Scotland and not in England.

“And I think England gives you the pathway to hopefully try and build something bigger and there’s a lot of scope to move up.”

Neil began his managerial career at Hamilton Academical before being cherry-picked by Norwich in early 2015.

The Bellshill-born boss led the Canaries into the Premier League after just six months at the helm, but couldn’t keep them up last term.
