The Leeds united midfielder could be heading for the exit but do the club regret not cashing in while they could?

Not long ago, Leeds United had a group of young players touted by many as the fantastic four; footballers many Whites fans felt would be the future of the club.

Lewis Cook and Sam Byram have since moved on to Bournemouth and West Ham United respectively, leaving Charlie Taylor and Alex Mowatt at Elland Road.

While the full-back has continued to impress, the latter has struggled to get anywhere near his best form, starting only four league games all season and failing to get on the score sheet in 15 matches in all competitions.

When a promising young player’s contract is coming to an end, fans will fear the worst, but in the case of Mowatt it seems his Leeds career could be fizzling out.

The club will be desperate for Charlie Taylor to sign a new deal. However Mowatt seems surplus to requirements under Garry Monk and it would be no surprise to see him move on at the end of the campaign, especially if Leeds make it back to the Premier League.

After all, if he cannot get into a promotion-chasing side, what chance does he have of featuring regularly in the top flight?

It has not always been this way for Mowatt, who was once tipped for superstardom, and while he still has plenty of time to get his career back on track one wonders if he is in fact the young player Leeds wish they had cashed in on while they had the chance.

They would have at least got some money for the player, and while it must be noted that he is playing out of position this season, the very fact that he cannot get near his preferred place shows that Leeds may have outgrown him rather than the other way around.
