Scotland manager Alex McLeish has suggested to The Glasgow Evening Times that he could recall Sheffield Wednesday striker Steven Fletcher.

Fletcher has not played for Scotland since last October when he featured against Slovenia in a 2018 World Cup qualifier, as reported by The Glasgow Evening Times.

The 31-year-old former Wolverhampton Wanderers and Sunderland striker has been playing well for Wednesday this season.

The Scotland international striker has scored two goals and provided two assists in six Championship starts for the Owls so far this campaign, according to WhoScored.

Scotland manager McLeish has suggested that he could bring Fletcher back into the fold for next month’s Nations League matches against Albania and Israel.

McLeish told The Glasgow Evening Times: “There is a place for more experienced players. Most of the guys who Gordon (former Scotland boss Strachan) had haven’t been playing in the last six months.

“We’ve had to call up a lot of young players. Oli McBurnie came in from the under-21s and he’s still a work inprogress. We’re not exactly prolific.

“But Steven Fletcher is now coming back into the scene at Sheffield and we’ll look at that one with a bit of interest.

“I’ve got to keep encouraging the guys. But I love having guys with a bit of nous and experience who can help the team. I know what a difference that makes.”

Joy for Steven Fletcher

Fletcher is a good striker and has done relatively well for Scotland in his career, and it would make sense for McLeish to have the Wednesday striker in the squad for next month’s matches.

The Wednesday striker will certainly be delight that he is being considered for a Scotland recall, and perhaps that will spur him to play even better in the coming weeks.
