Alex McLeish has told the Scotsman that he informed Glasgow Rangers’ board that he wanted to win the title with the Ibrox side, when he was interviewed for the manager’s job.

McLeish was one of the leading candidates to take over at Rangers, following the dismissal of Mark Warburton.

And the Scottish boss claims that if he had taken charge at Rangers then he wouldn’t have been patient in his aim to catch Celtic.

“It’s not 10-in-a-row they’ve got to be worried about, it’s next year and stopping seven in a row,” McLeish said.

“That’s got to be the immediate goal. It’s not as if I’m saying I’m not bothered about 10 in a row – they’ve got to stop the next one. “That’s what I said when I sat down with Rangers. “I said: ‘Listen, somehow you have to win the title next year by hook or by crook’. “Never mind trying to get closer to them. It’s just the way Rangers and Celtic are.”

In the end, Rangers decided to appoint Pedro Caixinha instead of McLeish, and the Portuguese boss has started well.

Caixinha is yet to be beaten during his five matches in charge of the Light Blues.

The 46-year-old arguably faces his toughest test yet at the weekend though, with Rangers set to take on Celtic for a place in the Scottish Cup final.

Rangers are yet to beat Celtic this season, in four attempts, and they are stuck 33 points behind their Glasgow rivals in the Premiership standings.
