Rangers goalkeeper Allan McGregor and Celtic custodian Craig Gordon are tremendous, Scotland manager Alex McLeish has told The Times.

McGregor returned to Rangers in the summer transfer window and has been one of the best players for Steven Gerrard’s Ibrox club so far this season.

Gordon – who earns £8000 per week as salary, according to The Daily Star – has been at Celtic since 2014 and is one of the best goalkeepers in the Scottish Premiership.

Both McGregor and Gordon are fighting for the number one goalkeeping spot in the Scotland team, and manager McLeish has spoken highly of the duo.

McLeish told The Times ahead of Scotland’s matches against Belgium and Albania: “It’s difficult when you’ve got two goalies of a tremendous level. England had that problem way back in the day with Peter Shilton and Ray Clemence, and they played one game each.

“I don’t want to lose any of our keepers. I want these two guys to be around for as long as possible. For these two games we have had an amicable agreement. We believe the two of them have that competitive spirit where one wants to usurp the other.”

Quality goalkeepers

McGregor is 36 years of age, while Gordon is 35, but there is no doubt that the Rangers and the Celtic goalkeepers are superb and in top form.

It can only be good for Scotland if the Rangers and the Celtic custodians continue to play well and push each other in the coming months and years.

Both Celtic and Rangers are challenging for the Scottish Premiership title this season.
