Alex McLeish has praised Celtic striker Leigh Griffiths for rising to the challenge of competing with former Rangers star Steven Naismith for a place in the Scotland starting lineup, as quoted in The Daily Record.

Former Rangers striker Naismith, now on loan at Heart of Midlothian from Norwich City, was superb for Scotland in their last international break.

Challenge

As reported by The Daily Record, Scotland manager McLeish hinted that the 32-year-old, who can also operate as an attacking midfielder, will start for the team during the international break in October as well.

Since then, 28-year-old striker Griffiths – who has been on the books of the Glasgow giants since January 2014 when he joined from Wolverhampton Wanderers for a transfer fee reported by The Daily Mail to be worth £1 million – has been banging in the goals for Celtic and is back in good form.

Response

Scotland manager McLeish is pleased to see the former Livingston and Dundee star rise up to the challenge.

McLeish told The Daily Record about Griffiths: “Naisy has been in great form, and Leigh has hit back with three goals and started in the Celtic team in the last four games. It’s nice to see him taking up that challenge.”
