Rangers have made a patchy start to the season under Pedro Caixinha.

Rangers manager Pedro Caixinha is seen prior to the Betfred League Cup Quarter Final at Firhill Stadium on September 19, 2017 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Ex-Rangers manager Alex McLeish has told Sky Sports’ The Debate that he thinks there is unrest at Ibrox, but wants to see manager Pedro Caixinha given time to get things right.

Rangers chose to bring in Caixinha as Mark Warburton’s replacement back in March, and gave the Portuguese boss a couple of months to analyse his squad ahead of a busy summer transfer window.

Caixinha not only brought in 11 players, such as Bruno Alves, Graham Dorrans, Carlos Pena and Alfredo Morelos, but also let 11 leave, as the likes of Joe Garner, Martyn Waghorn and Barrie McKay left Ibrox.

A general view of Ibrox Stadium is seen ahead of the EURO 2016 Qualifier match between Scotland and Georgia at Ibrox Stadium on October 11, 2014 in Glasgow, Scotland.

So far, results have been largely the same as they were under Warburton; decent enough results against teams in the lower reaches of the Scottish Premiership, but often unconvincing displays punctuated by defeat to Old Firm rivals Celtic.

After spending £8million on their summer signings, Rangers remain some way shy of Celtic at the top of the Scottish Premiership, and Caixinha’s position has been brought under scrutiny since the 2-0 loss to Celtic last month.

Add in that Caixinha appears to have decided to freeze veteran Kenny Miller out of the squad, and former Rangers boss Alex McLeish has offered his take on the situation in the blue half of Glasgow.

McLeish has told Sky Sports’ The Debate that he thinks there is some unrest at Ibrox amid Miller’s surprise exclusion, but Rangers must stick with Caixinha having backed him financially over the summer.

McLeish added that the new signings made over the summer ‘have to get better’, and whilst Alves is the big-name addition, the other players need time to settle, and must only be judged in up to two months.

“It does seem that there’s a little bit of unrest,” said McLeish. “Pedro Caixinha spent quite a lot of money, the board sanctioned that, so they have to give him a chance. They have to be patient with him, he’s not had too many fantastic results in recent weeks, you would expect them to be beating most of the other teams – but for the life of me, I can’t see them winning the title for a few years to come.”

“I would say that these guys have to get better. In the Premier League, some unknown foreigners come in and they take a long time to settle, well that’s happened to Rangers. Bruno Alves is the only celebrity player, if you like, that we know, and that’s why I say that Caixinha must be given time. We have to judge these players a month or two down the line,” he added.
