Mark Warburton’s Glasgow Rangers are second in the Scottish Premiership table at the moment.

Former Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest manager Alex McLeish has suggested to The Daily Record that Rangers should not make massive spending in the January transfer window.

Rangers are playing in the Scottish Premiership this season after winning automatic promotion from the Scottish Championship at the end of the 2015-16 campaign.

The Gers are second in the league table at the moment with 39 points from 21 matches. The Glasgow giants are 19 points behind leaders and Old Firm rivals Celtic, who also have a game in hand.

Rangers are unlikely to catch Celtic at the top of the standings this season, but they do need to sign players in the January transfer window.

With Aberdeen and Heart of Midlothian also challenging for the runners-up spot in the table, Mark Warburton’s side would enhance their chances of finishing second if they are able to strengthen their squad.

Former Rangers manager McLeish has warned the Ibrox outfit against spending a lot of money in the January transfer window.

“I don’t think Rangers can go big in the transfer market right now,” McLeish told The Daily Record. “They are being very cautious and trying to bring in the right players for this moment.

“Recruitment is absolutely vital over these next few years but right now they can’t go absolutely crazy in the transfer market. The resources just aren’t there and they have to live by their means.”

Rangers will return to action on Saturday afternoon when they take on Motherwell at Ibrox in the fourth round of the Scottish Cup.

The Gers have signed Emerson Hyndman and Jon Toral on loan from Bournemouth and Arsenal respectively so far in the January transfer window.
