Alex McLeish says that Rangers should not focus on toppling Celtic at the moment.
Former Rangers manager, Alex McLeish says that the Gers should not worry about stopping Celtic’s march towards tenth title in a row.
McLeish feels that catching up with Celtic is much beyond Rangers at present, but a more realistic target will be to become the second-best team in the country.
Rangers had a poor 2016/17 campaign where they not only finished 39 points behind Celtic, but also behind Aberdeen.

The Gers have gone through a massive rebuilding process this summer, but, despite signing nine new players, their shock Europa League exit to Luxembourg minnows Progres Niederkorn this week, has prompted many to believe that Pedro Caixinha’s side could struggle this season as well.
What worries McLeish is that despite being an elite club, Rangers are not winning matches week in and week out.
The former Rangers boss advises that Rangers’ biggest goal should be to get above Aberdeen for now.
However, it won’t be easy for Rangers to usurp Aberdeen as Derek McInnes has made some good signings and they are looking as a strong unit again.
“Rangers can’t be thinking about stopping 10-in-a-row right now, they’ve got to look upon every year as a fresh challenge,” said McLeish, as quoted by The Glasgow Evening Times.
“They’d love to stop seven in-a-row, and if they don’t, they’ve got to stop eight in-a-row. That’s what the challenge has got to be at Rangers.
“They are in an elite group of clubs in the world that have to win every week, and Rangers aren’t doing at the moment. It’s a tough, tough phase for the supporters, who have had a few years of hell. They just want to get back to those old traditional days of week-in, week-out victories.
“But at the same time, Derek McInnes looks as if he’s doing some good business as well, so overtaking Aberdeen will be tough enough for them.
“If they can’t usurp Celtic, which at this moment seems unlikely, they’ve got to get above Aberdeen and that’s got to be their biggest goal.”
