Alex McLeish has told The Scottish Sun that Steven Gerrard’s Glasgow Rangers need to win against Neil Lennon’s Celtic next.

Rangers are at the top of the Scottish Premiership table at the moment with 21 points from eight matches, two points clear of second-placed and bitter Old Firm rivals Celtic.

The Gers went to the top of the league table before the international break, and while former Rangers manager McLeish is pleased, he wants Gerrard’s side to win against the Hoops in their next Old Firm derby.

McLeish told The Scottish Sun: “Gerrard’s obviously had to play a bit of catch-up in terms of cash, and Celtic have spent their money really well. Celtic have also nurtured some really good young players, and you have to give them credit for what they have done.

“But Rangers look like they are getting that confidence, and Gerrard has given them a bit of steel again.

“I saw the Old Firm game at the start of the season. Everyone had high hopes, but it wasn’t to be. But they are top of the league now, and next they have to prove they can beat Celtic.”

Title race

Rangers were disappointing against Celtic at Ibrox in the last Old Firm derby, and for the Gers to make a real statement, they have to pick up all three points against the Hoops the next time the two sides lock horns with each other.

Under Gerrard, Rangers are going strong in the league and in the Europa League at the moment, and there is an air of optimism at Ibrox this season.
