Alan Hutton is out of contract at Aston Villa this summer.
Alex McLeish has described the capture of Alan Hutton at Aston Villa as a “safe signing” to Birmingham Live after the Scottish manager brought the right-back to Villa Park in the summer of 2011.
Hutton, now 33, replaced Luke Young at Villa as McLeish reunited himself after the duo had combined at Rangers beforehand before Hutton moved to Tottenham.
However, now the former Scotland international is in the final months of his contract at Villa, which the Daily Star report is worth a huge £30,000 a week with the Midlands club.
McLeish spoke about Hutton and reckons his signature was good for the club financially when he was brought in, and also claimed that the defender will have plenty of offers as his future with Villa looks to be coming to an end.
“His athleticism was great,” McLeish said. “He was one of the forerunners for what we see now as full-backs. Getting forward and having the energy to get back as well.
“He had an excellent spell at Rangers which eventually culminated in his £10million move to Tottenham. Bringing him to Villa was a deal that suited the financial people, it was a safe signing.
“When you get older you tend to get lazy and wind your career down, but he has kept going and I’m sure he’ll move to a club after Villa and be a good catch for somebody.”
Hutton is expected to leave Villa this summer as manager Steve Bruce confirmed that the club would not be able to renew his contract due to financial fairplay regulations – but did hint a renewal could be offered if they gain promotion.
He has been a mainstay under Bruce this season, and he is expected to remain a crucial part of the starting eleven as Villa aim to gain promotion back to the Premier League at the second attempt.
