Ibrox side Glasgow Rangers brought Joey Barton in during the previous transfer window to add experience to their midfield ranks.
Former Glasgow Rangers boss Alex McLeish has told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast Show, which was broadcast on TalkSPORT on October 5th, that Mark Warburton could be hurting himself at Ibrox by suspending Joey Barton.
Barton was given a three week break from Rangers’ training and matches, after he was involved in a disagreement with Andy Halliday.
However, McLeish has questioned whether banishing Barton from Rangers training was the smartest move.
“I really don’t know what’s going on inside the four walls of Ibrox, but to be suspended for three weeks. You wonder why,” McLeish said.
“In some ways you think Mark is hurting himself, because the player is not going to keep active in terms of match fitness. You ask whether he is still an integral part of their plans. We are still in the dark about this.”
Barton has now not played for Rangers since their heavy defeat against Celtic in the Old-Firm derby.
It is unknown whether the 34-year-old will ever play for the Glasgow side again, with his future at Ibrox firmly up in the air.
Barton was brought to Rangers to add steel and experience to their midfield, but he has created headlines for all the wrong reasons so far.
Barton is set to return to Rangers in the near future, and will be available for their first match after the international break, but it remains to be seen whether Warburton will pick the former Burnley and Newcastle United midfielder.
