Ibrox side Glasgow Rangers have not got the best out of Joey Barton so far.

Former Rangers boss Alex McLeish

Former Glasgow Rangers boss Alex McLeish has told the Herald Scotland that he believes Joey Barton will have plenty of interest from English clubs.

Barton’s time at Ibrox has not gone according to plan so far, with the midfielder failing to show his best on or off the pitch.

Barton has recently been suspended from Rangers training, after an altercation with Andy Halliday.

Even when he was available, Barton did not do much to impress at Ibrox – with his performances falling short of expectations.

However, McLeish has suggested that Rangers could still be having to fend off interest in the central midfielder in January, if they do want to keep him.

“We have seen it before when players just dig their heels in,” he said. “I don’t know if Joey Barton is that type of guy. I know Joey a bit but not well enough to say he is going to do one thing or another.

“I am sure he wants to keep playing at the highest level unless he gets the offer of coaching or something like that. I would have thought Joey still wants to play and continue the journey towards the end of his career. I am sure there would still be teams in England that would want him.”

Barton’s Rangers career is currently in the balance, but he has previously insisted that he still wants to make a success of his time at Ibrox.

To do so, he will need to win over Rangers boss Mark Warburton through his performances in training – when he is allowed to return to action.

Rangers’ next fixture comes against Inverness at the weekend, but Barton will not feature in that match.
