Aston Villa have been heavily linked with the Premier League legend.

Former Aston Villa boss Alex McLeish has told talkSPORT that John Terry’s experience would be “absolutely marvellous” in the Championship next season.

Aston Villa have been strongly linked with a move for the former Chelsea captain, who won five Premier League titles, and a Champions League crown, during his time in West London.

Sky Sports reported this week that Villa boss Steve Bruce had offered the 36-year-old a one-year deal in the West Midlands next season as the Villans plot a return to the top flight.

And McLeish believes that the former England captain represents an ideal signing by Bruce, if it happens.

“John Terry is a guy who has a lot to give to football. He has been in the game as a player a long, long time. His experience is absolutely marvellous,” he told talkSPORT.

“John knows the legs are not what they used to be.

“If he does his coaching badges then he is going to be in a group of coaches all looking for jobs in a couple of years times or so. His experience is amazing.”

In theory Terry seems like a fine signing. His experience and leadership would undoubtedly aid Aston Villa in their quest to escape the Championship, but he is 36 – and turns 37 in December – and it is an arduous 46-match season.

It remains to be seen whether or not he would stand up to the rigours of England’s second tier.
