Aston Villa are on the lookout for a new goalkeeper this summer as Dean Smith plans for their return to the Premier League.

A new goalkeeper is needed at Aston Villa, well so it seems if you read the latest transfer reports as Southampton’s Alex McCarthy is now being tipped to move to the newly-promoted club.

Sky Sports have claimed that Villa have turned their attention to the 29-year-old as they aim to bring in a new shot-stopper before their season gets underway in August.

Added with that, the Mirror have claimed that Villa are drawing up a plan to land Stoke City’s Jack Butland as cheap as they can get him.

It is said that they are seemingly waiting for his £23 million price tag to drop after initially being quoted £27 million for his services.

Well, Villa should wait no further because pound for pound there is arguably a better player waiting in McCarthy, who produced the goods for the Saints when called upon last season.

More than likely, Villa would have to pay a substantial fee for Butland, there is no point in splashing the cash on the England man when a player like McCarthy can easily argue that he could do the job for Villa next term.

The 29-year-old is more than experienced enough in terms of age and he has 66 games to his name when it comes to Premier League matches, so he is used to the big stage.

As Villa have proven in recent years, it’s the cheaper options that work for them. From John McGinn to the now departed Glenn Whelan.

The unknown players or the so-called unfancied players are the ones that got them promoted, so if the club are looking in that direction again, but this time for Premier League quality, then McCarthy should be the player they show push for.
