Southampton scored in each half to reach the quarter-finals of the FA Cup for the first time since 2005.

The Sainsts centre-back Wesley Hoedt gave the visitors an early lead when he took advantage of slack defending from the home side in the 11th minute.

After the break, Dusan Tadic scored a brilliant chip to make it 2-0. The Baggies pulled one back through Salomon Rondon, who scored from a stunning volley to restore hope.

The home side pushed hard for an equaliser but the Southampton defence stayed resolute. After the match, Saints goalkeeper Alex McCarthy took to social networking site Twitter to express his reaction.

The 28-year-old was one of the stand-out performers from the match. He tweeted:

The Saints are struggling badly in the Premier League. They are third from bottom, and are facing a run of five crucial games that could decide their survival hopes.

It was surprising to see Mauricio Pellegrino make only one change to his starting XI from last weekend’s 2-0 defeat by Liverpool, with Nathan Redmond replacing Oriol Romeu.

The victory will certainly give them loads of confidence, and it remains to be seen whether they can now put on a decent run in the league as well.
