Alex Iwobi and Djed Spence have bigged up ex-Arsenal star Chuba Akpom on Instagram after the Middlesbrough striker won the Championship’s Player of the Season.

Five years after leaving Arsenal, which included spells in Greece, Chuba Akpom is now cooking in the second tier of English football, where he could be Premier League bound.

Michael Carrick’s Boro are heading towards a play-off finish and they will then be three games away from the promised land – this despite sitting one-point above the drop zone when the Manchester United legend replaced Chris Wilder in October.

Akpom, who is now 27, has played a huge role in that scoring 28 goals from his 36 league matches, although, he was an unused substitute during his side’s 2-1 defeat to third-placed Luton on Monday night.

Either way, the Hale-End academy product is rightfully getting the plaudits left, right and centre for his performances.

And when Akpom shared his delight at winning Player of the Year on his IG, in the comments section, Spurs defender Djed Spence, who was at the Riverside with Akpom, posted ‘the only way is up’, whilst his former Arsenal teammate, Alex Iwobi, added ‘big’ and Ivan Toney told him it was ‘deserved’.

AKPOM STARTING TO FULFILL HIS POTENTIAL

When the all-action forward was coming through at Arsenal, it was around the period Jack Wilshere had come through, Cesc Fabregas was at the club and so was Arsene Wenger.

A lot was expected of Akpom, but for one reason or another, he just couldn’t make it click.

But, whether Boro go up or not, it wouldn’t be a surprise if he is in the Premier League, one way or another, next season because his performances are deserving of it.
