Everton winger Alex Iwobi told the club’s official website after beating Wolves that his teammates are laughing at him in training for his heading – but it’s fair to say it’s paying off so far.

The Toffees beat Wolves 3-2 on Sunday afternoon, and it was new signing Iwobi who scored Everton’s second goal of the day, heading home Gylfi Sigurdsson’s cross.

That was Iwobi’s second Everton goal in a matter of days, and the bizarre thing was that it was another headed goal for the winger.

Iwobi went from one headed goal in his entire spell with Arsenal, to two in two games for Everton, in a somewhat unexpected twist for the Nigerian international.

After the game, Iwobi suggested that his teammates have been laughing at him for trying to head the ball in training, but he feels the extra work is paying off now.

“I don’t know what’s been happening, they [teammates] laugh at me when I try to head the ball in training,” said Iwobi. “But the practice has been paying off. I was just trying keep it on target [against Wolves]. I didn’t know I could jump that high,” he added.

Alex Iwobi of Everton scores his team's third goal during the Carabao Cup Second Round match between Lincoln City and Everton at Sincil Bank Stadium on August 28, 2019 in Lincoln, England.

Two headed goals in two games may be something of an anomaly in Iwobi’s career, but he’s working on that side of his game – and Everton will be hoping that he continues despite the laughter.

Having two wingers who can attack the ball in the air at the back post is a great asset to have, and Iwobi and Richarlison both showed they can do that against Wolves with headed goals.

Building on that can make Everton such a potent attacking threat, especially with Gylfi Sigurdsson and Lucas Digne whipping crosses in, and whilst defenders may expect Iwobi and Richarlison to threaten them with pace and skill, their aerial work could give Marco Silva’s side a different edge.
