Fleetwood Town goalkeeper Alex Cairns has taken to Twitter to reflect on the season and send a message to Leeds loanee Lewie Coyle after the full-back took home two of the club’s end of season awards.

Coyle joined the League One side from the Whites last summer and has enjoyed a hugely successful year at Highbury. He has made 42 appearances in the league and looked extremely impressive and solid throughout the campaign.

It has been a season that has seen the 22-year-old stake a claim to Paul Heckingbottom ahead of his return to Elland Road, and it has also seen Coyle end the year with two of the club’s end of season awards.

Not only was he named Junior Cod Army Player of the Year, but Coyle also took home the Players’ Player of the Season, which is undoubtedly a huge achievement for the defender given that the award is decided by his teammates.

And after the announcement was made, Cairns – who himself, came through the Elland Road youth ranks and made one of the more famous league debuts for the Whites before leaving in 2015 – took to social media to praise the Leeds-owned starlet.

With right-back a position that looks a strength for Leeds when everyone is fit and not suspended, Coyle undoubtedly needed to make the most of his time away from the club to prove that he can make the grade.

He looked impressive when given a chance last season, but was battling against the Whites’ most consistent player in Luke Ayling. And while it would be little surprise if Ayling returned to being first-choice once he is fully fit, Coyle’s performances at Fleetwood have to give Heckingbottom reason for optimism if a change is required.
