The 55-year-old manager left Hull City in the summer, resigning after four very successful years with the Tigers.
Hull City manager Steve Bruce and son Alex Bruce celebrate with the trophy after winning promotion back to the Premier League
Hull City defender Alex Bruce told SkySports yesterday that he didn’t feel his father Steve Bruce ever truly wanted to leave Hull City, whilst fellow centre-back Curtis Davies gave his support of caretaker manager Mike Phelan.
Bruce resigned as Hull City manager in the summer, reportedly due to his growing frustrations in the transfer market and a breakdown in the relationship with the clubs owners. The former Manchester United defender left his post as Hull City’s most successful ever manager.
Two promotions, two Premier League seasons, one FA Cup final and one European venture in just four years in charge represented a very impressive four years at the helm, but there was a growing feeling that Bruce’s departure was imminent, with his frustrations becoming more and more evident throughout his tenure.

Yesterday, Bruce said, “I think if Dad was being truthful, he would never have wanted to leave.”
“However, relationships break down and it was agreed that for the good of the club it was right for him to move on, and he wished everyone all the best.”
“Obviously Mick’s taken over and done very well and he’s [Steve Bruce] absolutely fine, he’s content. We had some great times in the four years with two promotions, everything looked rosy but it was just very disappointing.”
Son Alex, who is currently out inured, went on to say, “But that’s football, things can change very quickly. In a matter of eight weeks he was gone and another manager was coming in.”

Curtis Davies, meanwhile, voiced his support for current caretaker manager Mike Phelan.
“We’ve started well and to have a change now would be quite drastic,” said the Hull City captain, who is statistically the best defender in Europe so far this season.
“We’ve got the players in now and I thought the next thing would be just signing a contract so, obviously I don’t know what goes on with Mick and his representatives and the club, but, ultimately we want him to stay.”
Curtis Davies has had a magnificent start to the season with Hull City
The Tigers face Arsenal this weekend, with whom they are level on points with, following two wins, one draw and one defeat in their opening five games.
Few people expected Hull City to be level on points with Arsenal and Liverpool after just four games, but it is testament to the work Mike Phelan has done on the training ground that they are in this position.
Whilst it is has been an excellent start, the Tigers can’t afford to let their performance levels drop, as they face Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea in their next three league games.
