According to the Chronicle, Newcastle United boss Rafael Benitez is planning on bringing in a new striker in January – and that should be the cue for Aleksandar Mitrovic to leave St. James’ Park.

Newcastle are expected to have money to spend in the upcoming transfer window, and a striker is said to be high up on Benitez’s wishlist.

The Magpies have struggled to find a prolific scorer this season, with Dwight Gayle and Joselu both performing roles as Newcastle’s leading attacker.

Mitrovic, though, has already found it very difficult to break into Newcastle’s team – and if a new forward arrives then he will only fall further down the pecking order.

Mitrovic has made just two appearances for Newcastle in all competitions, and he has scored both times he has featured.

However, Benitez appears to have serious doubts over utilising the Serbian international with any regularity.

And, although Mitrovic has fought hard to attempt to break back into Benitez’s team, if a new striker comes in, it will be time for the 23-year-old to concede defeat and move on.
