Tottenham Hotspur are having to pay big money to keep their stars, and with a Serie A team monitoring Toby Alderweireld’s negotiations, Spurs hope to get another key player signed up on an extended contract.
Toby Alderweireld is a player that Tottenham Hotspur have no intention of selling, but they may have to come up with a contract that puts him on a par with Harry Kane and Hugo Lloris, a deal they are currently discussing reports the Daily Mirror.
Alderweireld has had another phenomenal season at White Hart Lane, but now it doesn’t seem enough that he has two-years left on his contract, and an option for Spurs to extend the contract by 12 months.
But Spurs should not be complaining. His statistics warrant a pay rise by Premier League standards. Having made 1266 accurate passes in 20 appearances last season, he is an integral player in Spur’s back line. He also won 92 duels with opposition players and provoked 27 successful off-side calls.
Tottenham’s Toby Alderweireld celebrates
His performances at centre-back have been so compelling that he surely deserves the best contract that Spurs can afford him. But Spurs must try and keep the wages at a level that they can sustain, as they have been renewing several contracts for their big names in the last few months.
Alderweireld may need to negotiate his way to a higher contract, but it is in Tottenham’s interest to reward their best players and to keep pace with what they could receive elsewhere. If they get the contract done, it will give the team another boost.
The urgency of the talks have also been prompted by outside interest in the player, as Chinese-backed Italian giants Inter Milan would love nothing more than to lure him away, according to the Daily Mirror report.
However, Inter Milan’s interest for Alderweireld may well fade in the coming days. The Italians are close to signing Sampdoria defender Milan Skriniar, 22, according to Football Italia, but Internazionale have very deep pockets and may view the Spurs defender as a project they can come back to at a later date.
Tottenham’s Toby Alderweireld won’t be running off if he can get another great deal at Spurs
It all plays into Alderweireld’s hands, but Spurs will be looking to lock down a player that should be the envy of every other team in the Premier League. In fact, keeping the Belgian happy and valued in North London and tied to Tottenham for the long term could be as good as any deal they make all summer
Pocchettino will know that by keeping Alderweireld’s name on a longer contract he’ll have another key man set in place. This would keep Spurs well on track to rival other Champions League teams and to have another strong domestic season.
