Uncertainty surrounds the future of Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld.

Spurs are reported to be ready to cash in on the Belgian defender this summer, report HLN, for a fee of just £44 million.

Alderweireld’s injury absence this season has taught Tottenham how to cope without him, but this would not be possible without leader Jan Vertonghen.

Vertonghen was at Spurs before Alderweireld and could outlast him, but his contract situation will have fans feeling uneasy.

His contract expires in June 2019, and he is a model professional on and off the pitch for Spurs.

Alderweireld’s situation has hit a brick wall, and this should have Tottenham moving heaven and earth to try and tie Vertonghen to a long-term extension.

Perhaps the slow activity speaks of a relaxed and confident approach on Tottenham’s part that they can get a deal done, but they cannot afford to be complacent.

If Alderweireld is sold then it could cause Vertonghen to question his own future.

Getting Vertonghen to sign on the dotted line first on the other hand, would pile pressure on Alderweireld to do the same.

Replacing one is difficult, but trying to start from scratch without both Belgians would be a nightmare scenario.
