Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld has revealed to The Times what he speaks with Jan Vertonghen about before every game.

Alderweireld and Vertonghen are two of the best centre-backs in the Premier League and were key in Spurs’ huge success last season.

The duo played together at Dutch giants Ajax and have a superb understanding with each other.

Belgium international defender Alderweireld has revealed what he and Vertonghen discuss before every match.

“We know we have to do the job together — and it’s not just about Jan and me, by the way; it’s also about the full backs, the goalkeeper, the midfielders and the whole team,” Alderweireld told The Times about his partnership with Vertonghen.

“But, yeah, Jan and I work together. We talk about the striker we’re playing against, how we’re going to play. We talk a lot about what we’re going to do.”

Alderweireld could be set for a spell on the sidelines after picking up an injury during the Premier League game against West Bromwich Albion on Saturday afternoon.

The 27-year-old defender was stretchered off with a leg injury at The Hawthorns, with manager Mauricio Pochettino later telling the club’s official website that further assessment will be done.

If the former Atletico Madrid defender is out for a few weeks, then it could affect Tottenham.

Spurs are a very good team and are in the running for the Premier League title this season, but can they afford to have one of the best players in the division on the sidelines for a few weeks?
