Toby Alderweireld has admitted to Football London that even he doesn’t know if Jan Vertonghen will be at Tottenham Hotspur next season.
Vertonghen has just weeks remaining on his contract at Tottenham, and he is yet to be offered new terms.
Jose Mourinho is yet to officially confirm that Vertonghen will be allowed to leave on a free transfer, but the longer the Belgian goes without signing new terms, the more likely his departure seems.
Vertonghen has made himself available to play for Tottenham recently though, and started against Bournemouth.
And Alderweireld believes that the veteran defender’s commitment shows that Tottenham’s squad are still trying everything to get the side back on track, even if their performances have not been particularly positive.
“The criticism hurts because we gave everything. It is not a lack of this or that, everybody is putting everything into it,” Alderweireld said.
“Take Jan [Vertonghen] – we did not know if he was staying or not but here he is and that says a lot about him. That is very positive.”
Tottenham have struggled since the restart, with Jose Mourinho coming under some pressure.
However, their win over Arsenal at the weekend did at least lift the mood around the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium slightly.
Spurs are now in eighth place in the Premier League table, with their next game coming against Newcastle United tomorrow.
