Alasdair Gold has told his YouTube channel that Tottenham were “fuming” as Liverpool pipped them to the signing of Porto star Luis Diaz. Gold says those behind the scenes at Tottenham were “blaming” leaks in Portugal.
Diaz, 25, has joined Liverpool for a fee that could rise to a fee of £50million. It is believed a fee of £33million has been paid to Porto as an initial fee, and that £17million could also go to Porto if certain add-ons are met by Diaz.
That is according to the Guardian, who also report that Tottenham had a bid accepted for the Colombia international before the Reds. However, such a move from Spurs prompted Liverpool to enter the bidding.
Diaz is always said to have preferred Liverpool to Tottenham. Now, Gold has given an update – sharing that Tottenham were not happy in being beaten to the punch for Diaz’s signature towards the end of January.
“Spurs were furious. From what I understand they were blaming everyone. They were blaming leaks to the media, but the story originally broke in Portugal. No one from Spurs is leaking that to the Portuguese media.”
Gold on Diaz: Tottenham missing out extends gap with Liverpool
Bringing in Diaz at Tottenham would have seen them close the gap not only on the top four, but on the top three. Diaz is arguably the best attacker that had previously not joined a club in Europe’s top-five leagues.
He will score goals, his form in the Champions League is a guarantee of that. It was affordable for Tottenham. A front three of Harry Kane, Son Heung-min and Diaz would have been one of the best attacks in England.
But Liverpool getting him is not only a blow for Spurs in terms of quality, but it massively improves the Reds when they are without Mo Salah and Sadio Mane. It extends the already-sizable gap between the two sides.
