Fletcher had struggled for goals over the early part of the campaign when with Boro, and a move to the Stadium of Light appears to have done little for his form.
The 22-year-old has made three appearances for Sunderland to date, but he is yet to score.
And Sunderland fans have suggested that he isn’t a good enough replacement for Lewis Grabban.
Sunderland have very few other options up-front, so Fletcher may have to continue to start.
The youngster has just one goal in 19 Championship appearances, for both Sunderland and Middlesbrough.
