Rotherham United boss Alan Stubbs has told The Sheffield Star that he expects a lot more from Celtic loanee Scott Allan.
The 24-year-old midfielder joined the Millers on a season-long loan from Celtic in August.
He struggled to break into the first team under Ronny Deila last season, after joining the Hoops from Hibernian, and current Bhoys boss Brendan Rodgers does not see a place for him at Parkhead at the moment either.
The Scotland Under-21 international was omitted from the squad for Rotherham’s last two games in a decision which Stubbs – who managed Allan at Hibs – says is designed to make him reflect on his performances so far for the Championship club.
Stubbs obviously knows the man well, given their time in Leith, but the ex-Celtic defender says that Allan is simply not performing to a standard that he is capable of.
“The one thing I expect is 100 per cent commitment. I want to see that players care. I want to see character,” he told The Sheffield Star.
“If they give me that, then if they have a poor game I can accept that all day long. Nobody can play brilliantly every week. I understand that. That’s life.
“An element of Scott not being in the squad against Cardiff was a reaction to what I saw against Blackburn (a week earlier).
“We just left him out of the squad to reflect on his performances. He’s someone we feel has a lot more to offer than he is showing right now.”
If Allan has long-term hopes to be a Celtic player then impressing in the Championship, perhaps a tougher division than the Scottish Premiership, would send a big message to Rodgers, but it seems as if the chance is passing him by a little.
He has managed seven Championship appearances at United, four of which were from the start.
