Alan Stubbs suggests Scott Allan’s Celtic move was mistake

Scott Allan joined Celtic in 2015, but has barely played for the Hoops, spending most of his time out on loan.

In comments reported by the Daily Record, Alan Stubbs has suggested that Scott Allan probably made a mistake leaving Hibernian for Celtic back in 2015.

Allan has endured a frustrating time on the Hoops’ books. He has made just 13 Scottish Premiership appearances, including just two starts, and has spent most of his time with the club out on loan.

Frustrating spells with Rotherham United and Dundee failed to ignite, but the 26-year-old has really started to find his feet during his current loan spell – back at Easter Road with Hibs.

The midfielder has looked like the kind of player who attracted attention from Celtic three years ago, scoring a brilliant first goal in the Edinburgh derby win over Hearts earlier this month. And Stubbs has suggested that his current form highlights that it was arguably a mistake to leave Hibs for Parkhead a few years ago.

“Scott now has to weigh up what is more important to him. Moving to the big club where you are not necessarily going to play or finding a home where you get paid well and play every week,” he said, as reported by the Daily Record.

“Is an extra £2000-£3000 a week worth much more than the happiness and comfort of being in a place where you are enjoying your football?

“I don’t think Scott should have left Hibs in the first place. He’s not been able to find regular first-team football under Brendan Rodgers because there’s a lot of quality and competition at that club.”

What will give Neil Lennon encouragement about Allan’s long-term future is the fact that he has had a chance at Celtic and does not appear to be in Brendan Rodgers’ plans.

And with Celtic currently boasting several options in the middle of the park, it would arguably be a surprise if Allan’s first-team prospects significantly improve while he is away from the club – unless his form reaches another level in the remaining weeks of the season – and that may leave the door open for Hibs to perhaps see if he is available once again in the summer.
