Rangers boss Graeme Murty is unlikely to remain in the Ibrox hotseat beyond the end of the season.
Former Celtic defender Alan Stubbs has told The Scotsman that he believes Rangers need to appoint a manager in the same ilk as Hoops boss Brendan Rodgers.
Rodgers is closing in on a second successive treble as manager at Celtic, as the Hoops remain 10 points clear at the top of the Scottish Premiership. Their 4-0 drubbing of Rangers also sees them qualify for the Scottish Cup final.
With the League Cup final already in the bag, former Liverpool manager Rodgers is close to landing six trophies in two years north of the border and his excellent work has even seen him linked with a move to Arsenal.
Graeme Murty’s future at Ibrox beyond the end of the season looks all but over after failing to stop Celtic from completing another treble, and Stubbs reckons a man like Rodgers is required at Rangers.
“That seems to be a fundamental criteria they are looking for in the next manager,” Stubbs said. “Brendan came in to Celtic with an aura about him which, straightaway, commanded a huge amount of respect in the dressing room without even getting on the grass.
“That’s where Rangers have to get to. That same type of appointment – whether he is British or foreign. The most important thing for Rangers is that they have to get this next appointment right.”
The likes of Preston North End’s Alex Neil, Kilmarnock’s Steve Clarke and even Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard have been linked to what is set to be a vacant post at the end of the season.
Murty, 43, perhaps has one more chance to save his job at Ibrox this Sunday, as the Gers travel across Glasgow to Celtic Park to face Rodgers’ side for the final Old Firm derby of the season.
