Ibrox side Glasgow Rangers failed to tempt Derek McInnes to the vacant managerial role in Glasgow – and Alan Stubbs has a theory why.

Rangers manager Graeme Murty is seen during the Scottish Cup Quarter final match between Rangers and Hamilton Academical at Ibrox Stadium on March 4, 2017 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Alan Stubbs has told BT Sport that he believes Derek McInnes snubbed Rangers because he would’ve been working under a Director of Football.

The 46-year-old made headlines last week by rejecting Rangers in what was the last twist of a farcial pursuit of the Aberdeen manager.

Caretaker boss Graeme Murty was given the Gers job until the end of the season, which gives the Ibrox club a little bit more time to identify and hire a long-term replacement for Pedro Caixinha.

Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes is seen during the William Hill Scottish Cup Final between Celtic and Aberdeen at Hampden Park on May 27, 2017 in Glasgow, Scotland.

With January on the horizon, Rangers have a chance to add new players to their squad, but Murty revealed recently that he was powerless to influence that area, claiming that Director of Football Mark Allan is in full control over the players who come in.

And former Hibernian boss Stubbs believes that factor might well have deterred McInnes from going back to his former club to manage.

He told BT Sport: “It will be interesting why Derek didn’t take it and I think that [the director of football] is part of that, in terms of players.”

Rangers suffered a shock 3-1 defeat to St Johnstone at Ibrox on Saturday. Victory, oddly enough, will have put Murty’s side to within two points of Celtic, who have two games in hand.

Still, the 43-year-old, who has won six and lost three of his nine Premiership games in charge, has done a pretty good job for the most part, and the better Rangers do this season, the better his chances of being kept on beyond the summer.
