Rotherham United manager Alan Stubbs has told the Chronicle that the only difference between his side and Newcastle was the Magpies £60 million of talent.

Stubbs’ team took on Rafa Benitez’s side on Saturday afternoon in a clash between sides at different ends of the Championship table.

It proved to be a happy afternoon for the Magpies as a superb solo goal from Christian Atsu saw them leave with all three points.

In truth, they were lucky to do so as the home side put in a superb performance that was more than worthy of a point, if not all three.

Stubbs was certainly pleased with his team’s performance, saying the only difference was the money that had been spent on either squad.

“We really took the game to Newcastle and, if I’m perfectly honest, I think we made it a pretty uncomfortable game for them,” he told the Chronicle.

“The contrast between these two teams – I mean you’ve got a team in Newcastle that are fielding players worth about £60m, £70m or £80m. They spent more than £50m over the summer alone.”

Luckily for Newcastle United, their squad strength is helping them to do well in the Championship so far.

They are currently third in the table, with 22 points from their 11 games so far this season.

That leaves them just three points from surprise leaders Huddersfield Town and a point behind Norwich City in second.

They return to action after the international break when they take on seventh-placed Brentford at St James Park.
