Speaking on the Sky Sports Football Podcast, Alan Smith has been discussing Arsenal’s squad composition.

The Gunners are currently flying high at the top of the Premier League table, but there is this looming feeling that a collapse is on the way due to their lack of squad depth.

However, after Manchester City’s loss to Brentford earlier, Arsenal are guaranteed to be top at Christmas and with the January transfer window around the corner, additions will soon be possible. And Smith believes that recruitments will be on the horizon.

Indeed, the Sky pundit says that even Mikel Arteta could concede that his squad is thin and short of quality in some areas. Therefore, he expects Arsenal to dip into the market.

Arteta knows he needs more

Smith gave his verdict on Arsenal and how Arteta may view his squad.

“I think it’s no secret that the squad needs strengthening. It can look thin at times and it can look short of quality. Mikel Arteta would, in private, concede that and I’m sure he’d like to add in January. The recruitment department is on the money and they plan ahead to January and the following summer, so it will be interesting to see if they can add to the squad in January,” Smith said.

Depth needed

If Arsenal are to overthrow Manchester City and win the Premier League this season they will need to add more depth to their squad.

City have so many world-class players in every area that injuries are almost a non-factor for Pep Guardiola’s side.

Meanwhile, Mikel Arteta would be really struggling if one of William Saliba, Bukayo Saka or Thomas Partey picked up an injury, and that’s why he needs to strengthen in January.

Luckily, Arteta and Edu are probably well aware of this and the issues will be broached in January.
