Will Arsenal finish above Tottenham Hotspur this season?
Alan Smith has claimed that Arsenal have ‘closed’ the gap between their rivals Tottenham Hotspur as he believes that Mesut Ozil shouldn’t start the North London derby on Sunday afternoon.
In recent seasons, Tottenham have been the top dogs in North London, but in these past few months, there have been signs that it could be coming to an end.
Arsenal enjoyed a pretty healthy transfer window, whilst Spurs have suffered a number of poor performances, as well as off the field problems.
Speaking to Sky Sports Premier League (31/08/2019 8:25 pm), Smith believes all of the above culminating together means that the gap is closing, as he first shared his thoughts on Arsenal attacker Ozil and whether Unai Emery should start him against Spurs.
“Emery hasn’t used him [Ozil] in the big games,” Alan Smith told Sky Sports PL. “Given that he’s not played a game yet I doubt that he would be [starting]. On the bench, he’s a nice option. But it’ll be interesting to see the makeup of that midfield.
“What I would say is the gap has closed between the two. I think Spurs were ahead, the league placings have shown that. But over the summer and with what Tottenham suffered, I think Arsenal now are a little bit closer to them.”
Arsenal are currently two points above Spurs and that gap can open to five if they beat their neighbours at the Emirates Stadium.
Even though the supporters will be thrilled with that potential outcome, it is still early days in the season, but it seems as though both teams will be pretty close together when the season comes to a close.
But a lot has to happen before a situation such as that occurs, as supporters will be only thinking about winning the bragging rights, at this moment in time.
