BBC Sport pundit and Premier League legend Alan Shearer has spoken highly of Wolverhampton Wanderers’ display in their 2-0 Premier League win over Manchester City last weekend, praising Nuno Espirito Santo for how his side “were set up perfectly” to deal with Pep Guardiola’s charges.

Wolves impressed against one of the league’s most dangerous attacks, with their three-man defence holding firm, while at the other end, Nuno’s decision midway through the second half to move Adama Traore through the middle yielded major dividends as the winger scored twice on the counter-attack in the latter stages of the game.

The £18million signing from Middlesbrough had not scored since September 2018 but he made no mistake as Wolves twice broke clear of the home defence, with Raul Jimenez providing the assist on both occasions as the Molineux side beat the reigning English champions away from home for the first time since 1984 (BBC Sport).

Initially talking about Man City’s poor game, Shearer told BBC Sport: “The strength of their attack means the defence is not always tested but, on Sunday, they lacked ideas going forward too.

“Wolves deserve a lot of credit for that, because they were set up perfectly to soak up pressure. They left no space behind their backline and forced City to come inside or hit crosses into the box where their three centre-halves were waiting to clear. I usually associate City with quick and slick passing in and around the opposition’s 18-yard box, but there was not a lot of that on display on Sunday.”

Wolves, now 11th in the Premier League table and just four points off the top four, are next in action on Saturday 19 October with a league clash with Southampton at Molineux.
