Alan Shearer was left amazed by Liverpool duo James Milner and Trent Alexander-Arnold for their performance during Wednesday night’s 5-0 win over Watford.

Jurgen Klopp’s side issued a huge statement in the Premier League title race by thumping one of the in-form teams at Anfield and maintaining their one-point lead at the top of the table.

Shearer praised the ‘old man’ James Milner for setting the tone in the game and then waxed-lyrical about ‘the young man’ Alexander-Arnold for his display, particularly from an attacking sense.

Speaking to Match of the Day on BBC One (27/02/2019 at 11:00 pm), Shearer explained why the Reds duo were so dangerous on the night.

“From an old man, James Milner in the first two minutes, he set the tone of the game because he closed down not once, not twice, but three times,” Shearer told MOTD. “Then, after that, the young man took over. Trent Alexander-Arnold.

“You can’t give this boy that amount of time and space to whip balls in because he has got the ability to put it in that six-yard box and a forward will get on the end of it. He was absolutely magnificent getting forward and it was a masterclass in passing and cross.”

In the game itself, Klopp’s side went into the half-time break with a two-goal lead thanks to Sadio Mane before Divock Origi got in on the act midway through the second period.

Centre-back Virgil van Dijk then added two in the space of three minutes to ensure his team made a statement of intent in their quest to win the Premier League title.

Right-back Alexander-Arnold was a constant threat out wide, continually hugging that touchline and producing dangerous cross after dangerous cross. He ended up supplying three assists in the game.

Over the course of the season, Alexander-Arnold has played 19 league matches for the club, scoring one goal and providing nine assists to his teammates [transfermarkt].

Klopp and his team will now make the short trip to Everton on Sunday afternoon for another crucial league fixture.
