Premier League legend Alan Shearer has pulled no punches in issuing a warning to Tottenham Hotspur that will raise a smile over at Arsenal.
Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino
The Premier League’s all-time leading goalscorer turned pundit believes the North Londoners are on the verge of something special under manager Mauricio Pochettino.
It is difficult to argue with him as Spurs sit second in the table going into the run-in with Chelsea in their sights both in the league and the FA Cup semi-finals.
Pochettino’s side have become one of the most exciting English teams to watch and have lost just nine of their last 68 Premier League matches.
Their title tilt ended in a whimper last season as Leicester emerged victorious and hated rivals Arsenal leapfrogged them into second place.
Now Spurs look set to finally finish above their arch rivals for the first time in 22 years, given they are well clear of Arsene Wenger’s side.
It is a fact that will undoubtedly please Tottenham fans immensely.
But Shearer told The Sun that Spurs must get over their obsession with the Gunners if they are to realise their potential.
Alan Shearer
“I know from some of my friends, who are Tottenham fans, how angry they were that it (finishing above Arsenal) didn’t happen last year,” Shearer told The Sun.
“And if they don’t finish above Arsenal this year, they probably never will. In the long-term, though, Tottenham need to be thinking much higher than just toppling the Gunners.
“The manager Mauricio Pochettino has done a marvellous job and everything is so positive at this moment in time for them.”
