Alan Shearer has used Aston Villa’s recent signing of Wesley Moraes to make a point about Newcastle United’s spending in The Sun.

The Newcastle United legend believes that manager Rafael Benitez was not given the kind of money that managers of other clubs such Aston Villa are.

The former England international, who now works as a pundit for BBC Sport, has pointed at Villa’s recent signing of Wesley from Belgian side Club Brugge for a transfer fee reported by Sky Sports to be worth £22 million.

Newcastle have announced on their official website that Benitez will leave the Premier League at the end of the month when his current contract runs out.

Shearer wrote in The Sun: “Aston Villa have just been promoted and they have come in straightaway and smashed their transfer record on a £22million striker. That is what Rafa was up against.

“For Newcastle, he was probably worth ten to 15 points a season. With him in charge, there was no way they would have been relegated. Now, you have to fear the worst.”

Newcastle United without Rafael Benitez

Benitez was superb for Newcastle, and it was the Spaniard’s tactics and shrewd signings that saw the Magpies maintain their Premier League status for the past two seasons.

It will be interesting to see who Newcastle appoint as their next manager, but whoever he is, he is going to find it hard to keep the Magpies in the league.
