Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer believes Tottenham Hotspur will suffer after Harry Kane was sidelined for a month due to an ankle injury picked up against AFC Bournemouth.

Kane, 24, was taken off the pitch by Mauricio Pochettino during Spurs’ 4-1 win at the Vitality Stadium after suffering the injury, which has now been confirmed as damaged ankle ligaments.

It will see the Spurs talisman miss Spurs’ FA Cup quarter-final against Swansea City on Saturday – in what is an important clash for Spurs after their Champions League exit – as well as England’s friendlies against Netherlands and Italy.

With the World Cup in Russia this summer looming, Shearer believes the loss of Kane will hamper Spurs’ season but could benefit England as the centre-forward will be given a chance to rest.

The former Norwich City, Millwall and Leyton Orient loanee has been in excellent form for Spurs once again this season, scoring 35 goals in 39 league and cup outings.

He was on course to win the Premier League’s golden boot, but with Mo Salah and Spurs’ number 10 on 24 league strikers each, a third successive award is under threat.

Following the international break, Spurs face three difficult fixtures in Chelsea on the first, a trip to Stoke City on April 7 and then another huge clash against league leaders Manchester City a week later.
