The Newcastle United legend has hailed the impact of the two prospects after Sunday’s victory against Manchester United.
The Magpies had gone five matches without a win prior to the fixture at St James’ Park on Sunday.
With Man United in similar poor form, it was a real opportunity for Steve Bruce’s side to put their woes behind them in a big TV match.
The players delivered with a superb performance, well worthy of the three points.
Longstaff’s goal was the undoubted highlight, but Shearer was left impressed by the attitude of the youngster as much as anything, believing both brothers have given the whole club a big lift.
As quoted by The Chronicle, he said: “It was really refreshing that he wanted to get up there and try to make the impact that he did.
“What a story, and when I saw them both on the team sheet I automatically felt for his parents and what they were going through knowing what my parents went through on my debut.
“Their interview at the end of the game was refreshing for everybody. That is one of the things that has been missing in the last few weeks. It’s that energy and vibrancy. To chuck them in and see them do so well is great for everybody.”
What next for the Longstaffs?
It’s fair to Matty’s Premier League debut was a dream one and it should now unlock further opportunities for him in Bruce’s side.
Still just 19, patience is required with his development, but he’s clearly on the right track.
However, as Shearer notes, his youthful enthusiasm is the major reason there’s a bit of a buzz around Newcastle again and restricting that by being too careful could backfire.
Both he and Sean appear to have the potential to be top-flight regulars for years.
It shows that despite off the field drama at Newcastle, hope remains on matchday.
If the duo can become an integral part of an impressive run of form that sees the Magpies climb the table, that hope is only going to grow.
