On this day 20 years ago, Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer joined the club from Blackburn Rovers for what was at the time a world record transfer fee of £15 million.
The all-time Premier League record goalscorer took to social media network Twitter, highlighting how the move to his boyhood club was career defying:
Shearer’s time at St James’ Park was one littered with individual honours, but in what was one of football’s greatest shames, he never managed to win the league with the Magpies.

His refusal to sign for Manchester United on multiple occasions deprived him of the chance to become one of the most decorated players in English football history. It was, however, his loyalty to Newcastle that made him such a highly revered figure in the North East.

In his 10-year spell with Newcastle, Shearer scored 206 goals in 404 games. A quite remarkable return considering that he played in a side that finished inside the top-four only three times throughout his time with the club.
