Speaking on The Overlap, Alan Shearer has been asked about Mike Ashley’s reign at Newcastle United, and as you can probably imagine, he didn’t have the kindest words for the Magpies’ former owner.
Shearer is undoubtedly one of Newcastle United’s biggest legends, and it must have pained him to see his club struggle for years under Ashley.
The Match of the Day pundit has now gone on the record to speak about the Sports Direct magnate’s time at St James’ Park.
What’s been said?
Shearer gave his opinion on Ashley’s tenure.
“How would you describe Mike Ashley’s reign at Newcastle United,” Neville asked.
The former England captain used just six words to sum up Ashley’s time on Tyneside.
“Disastrous, flat, no hope, no excitement,” Shearer said.
“I couldn’t describe it in any other words.”

Perfectly put
Shearer has described Ashley’s spell at Newcastle better than any of us ever could have.
It’s short, but it’s not sweet, it’s a damning indictment of Ashley’s spell and it’s what he deserves.
Ashley was a poor owner, you don’t need us to tell you that, and the fact that he left a man as passionate as Shearer unexcited about Newcastle United tells you all you need to know.
United now have new owners and it looks as though they’re on the brink of an exciting new era and hopefully that can instil a bit of excitement back into this historic football club.
